Early risers across the South were treated to a spectacularly deep-red sunrise yesterday morning.
Workers at Port Otago were able to enjoy the phenomenon as they loaded and unloaded containers on Rio De La Plata, which arrived at 6.40am.
Since the arrival of the Rio-class container ship and its five sister ships last year, noise complaints from Otago Harbour residents have spiked, due to the low thumping the ships' generators emit.

A red sunrise is caused by Rayleigh scattering, in which most of the blue light is scattered away as it travels through Earth's troposphere about 6km to 10km above the ground.
A particularly dry and clear troposphere helps intensify the red colour.
