Dunedin LandSAR dog handler Dermot Mayock (left) and chairman Chris Coory with Fin, the 12-year-old retired search and rescue dog who will be out and about with other rescue staff in the city today, collecting for the organisation's annual street appeal.

It was hoped about $5000 could be raised for equipment and training of staff and new search and rescue dogs like Fin.

Mr Coory said the team had conducted 45 searches last year and nine so far this year.

It had been a busy couple of years and the funding was much needed, he said.

Collectors will be on street corners around the city centre, as well as at Post Shops, Pak'n Save, and the New World supermarket in Mosgiel.
