A mission to drive an electric car the length of New Zealand and back is set to reach the halfway mark today.

Beekeeper Craig Salmon, of Paihia, left Cape Reinga on November 21 in his 2012 Nissan Leaf electric car and is on track to reach Bluff tonight.

He plans to return to Cape Reinga by Christmas.

The journey was designed to show New Zealand motorists there was an alternative to burning fossil fuel, he said.

''We need to reduce the amount of carbon we are burning and this is a great, fun way of doing it.

''I absolutely love driving it ... It is completely quiet. You don't hear the engine at all and it is four times cheaper to run than petrol.''

To travel 100km cost about $5 in electricity, he said.

Once charged - a 20-minute task - the car would travel 150km around town or about 120km on the open road.

On the trip south, he had stayed at holiday parks because they had an easily accessible power supply, but last night he charged from a three-pin socket at a Waitati home.
