A person was taken to hospital in a serious condition following an alleged assault in George St shortly after midnight on Friday.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man who appeared in Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning, charged with wounding with reckless disregard, which has a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.

The man was remanded in custody and granted interim name suppression.

He is due to appear in court again next month.

A police spokesman said they were called to the "grievous assault" on George St about 12.30am on Saturday.

The scene remained cordoned off for most of the morning, with more than a dozen businesses behind police tape.

There were personal items and pools of blood in the street.

A man spoken to on Saturday afternoon said he had heard shouting for about 15 seconds on Saturday morning, followed by silence.

Police confirmed yesterday they were speaking to the victim.
