Creating a portrait should not be this hard.

Dunedin artist Ted Fox had a sore back and knees as well as some very worn fingerprints after creating his chalk pastel portrait of former The Chills singer-songwriter Martin Phillipps, of Dunedin.

Mr Fox, who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has done about 20 of these type of drawings and was creating the latest one as part of the INDx exhibition at Tuhura Otago Museum.

He did his drawing on the first floor of the museum by grinding down pastels and putting the dust on his right-hand fingers.

The Phillipps family had visited yesterday and given their approval to the drawing, he said.

It was great to see the family’s thumbs-up which made it all worthwhile.

"I’m pretty sore now with all the squatting you have to do. The fingerprints have gone. It all takes a toll."

He created the portrait over about 15 hours. His ASD helped with his art, showing those who watched him how an autistic person acted.

The portrait would go into a silent auction and if it was not bought he might give it to the Phillipps family.
