Quinn Harrex (3), of Tauranga, lets his rocket take flight, with the help of elves Aleisha Lord (left) and Lauren Pugh in the Otago Museum atrium in Dunedin yesterday.

Museum public engagement manager Rachel Cooper said hundreds of people had made space-related Christmas decorations in the elves' workshop in the atrium.

‘‘It's been really popular,'' Ms Cooper said.

The space theme was chosen to celebrate the museum's new planetarium.

Many people took a photo with the museum elves or snapped a ‘‘selfie with an elfie''.

Decorations could be made at the museum every day before Christmas.
