Rotary Park commissioner seeks decision on school

A letter has been sent to the Education Minister by Rotary Park School commissioner Cleave Hay, asking for a decision on the school's future.

The school reopened for term 1 with about 30 pupils, but the roll had since dropped to 21 pupils.

Parents began removing their children from the school when it became clear principal Carmel Casey was returning after six months' leave.

Mrs Casey has been the focus of allegations of incompetent teaching practices and staff bullying at the school.

Mr Hay said his investigations had found few new entrants were expected to enrol, and the resulting funding implications of the roll drop did not paint a pretty picture for the future of the school.

He said a letter was sent to Education Minister Hekia Parata soon after the school reopened for term 1, and outlined the situation at Rotary Park and the financial viability of the school.

"I signalled to her the situation, and she'll have to come back with an answer as to where we go from here.

"The picture is not looking good for the future of the school, and the parents are well aware of that.

"There is a consensus in the community that they want to support the school, but they are also realistic about its long-term viability."

A response was expected from the minister within the next four to five days, he said.
