Rotary Park school site up for tender

A Dunedin property with harbour views is up for tender for the first time in more than 30 years.

The former Rotary Park School site is being sold by the Ministry of Education after declining rolls forced the school to close at the end of 2012.

A Ministry of Education spokeswoman said the school was now surplus to educational purposes, and was placed in the Crown's disposal process, as required by the Public Works Act.

The Act requires surplus property to be offered to other government departments, previous property owners and local iwi, before being placed on the open market.

She said the ministry had been through the process and found the property was not wanted by any other agencies, the original owner or Ngai Tahu.

As a result, the property is to be advertised by real estate firm LJ Hooker.

The 1.6121ha property has a land value of $340,000 and a capital value of $1,125,000.

LJ Hooker licensee and manager Wayne Graham declined to say how much the property might fetch.

''It's a brilliant site.

''It's a level site and could have multiple uses - ideal for residential housing but could also be used for business or a childcare facility.''

Tenders close on July 10.

The school was closed at the end of last year following an internal dispute involving principal Carmel Casey, who became the focus of allegations of incompetent teaching practices.

The situation came to a head when parents began removing their children from the school. The school's roll dropped from more than 60 to 21 pupils in the space of two months.

Education Minister Hekia Parata ordered the appointment of a commissioner to take control of the school, but after community consultation, it was recommended the school be closed.
