The Greater Green Island Community Network has welcomed news that three roundabouts will be built on Main South Rd.

NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) senior safety engineer Roy Johnston told members of the Saddle Hill Community Board at a board meeting last week that new roundabouts would be constructed at intersections with Brighton Rd, Westland St and a SH1 off-ramp.

Building would start in the 2017-18 financial year.

Greater Green Island Community Network worker Amanda Reid said the change was "fantastic''.

Road safety and traffic and pedestrian safety were top concerns raised by residents in the Greater Green Island Community survey conducted last year.

The outcome had been the result of a "really good'' collaboration with the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Regional Council, she said.

Mrs Reid said the network had met regularly with the DCC since the survey results were released and had conducted public meetings on a proposed traffic plan for the area.

The network had also discussed proposed traffic changes, including the introduction of new roundabouts, at community events such as January's Brighton Gala Day.

She said the advocacy of the network had progressed matters more quickly than otherwise would have been the case.
