The event was based on the celebration of the Indian Holi Festival, and involved participants running and walking a 5km course.
They were brightly decorated by some eager dye-throwers after every kilometre.
Sport Otago marketing co-ordinator Amanda Dyer said getting people active was ''the bottom line''.
''I think it's just actually having people all together for a bit of fun.
''When you see the smiles on people's faces, it says it all.''
The event had been held in Waitaki, and the organisation was taking it around Otago.
The dye was a non-toxic food grade powder, which washed away easily. Sport Otago said similar events were held throughout the world, in cities such as Paris and Vancouver.
