The $850,000 refurbishment of St Kilda Fire Station was unveiled at its reopening on Thursday.

The work, which began last  August, includes a new sprinkler and alarm system, reroofing, a locker room, a decontamination wash facility, open-plan offices and bedroom refurbishments.

Deputy National Fire Service Commander Paul McGill officially reopened the station and said the refurbishment was part of a national scheme to renovate 27 stations in the next three years.

One of the most important aspects of the new building was the decontamination wash facility, he said.

''It's important to have that facility and keep the area beyond it clean, because remnants of a fire on people's skin can cause cancer in the long term.''

St Kilda firefighters have been based at the Dunedin City Station during the refurbishment and were ''very happy'' to be back.

Station Officer Kate Hill was excited to try out the new facilities and said she was already enjoying having a lot more room to manoeuvre.
