Police stopped about 80 vehicles in the Friday night operation.
Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall, Dunedin Road Policing Manager, said faulty brakes and bald tyres were of particular concern.
"Due to the fact it is winter this is a major concern as these vehicles would not be able to stop safely at speed on wet and icy roads," Snr Sgt McDouall said.
Twenty-six infringement notices were also issued to drivers and passengers during the operation.
