A Dunedin-based charitable trust will save thousands of dollars by servicing vehicles at its own workshop.

Community Care Trust unveiled its new facility this week, with the Abbotsford-based workshop to be used as a training base and vehicle service centre.

Chief executive Barney Cooper said the trust, which supports adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorders, could save an estimated $4000 a year by servicing its vehicle fleet.

Pre-warrant servicing, such as oil changes, would be carried out by two trained employees, with five people shortlisted for the roles, she said.

A grant to buy a car hoist from the Otago Community Trust helped make the workshop a possibility, and there were plans to offer services to other community groups, Ms Cooper said.
