Tom Galway may be 101 but he didn't let his age hold him back as he took his great-granddaughter Scarlett's scooter for a spin in Mosgiel last week.

Mr Galway's daughter, Carol McRobie-Shaw, of Mosgiel, said her daughter, Jan, and two granddaughters were visiting from Canberra and had brought their scooters with them to Mosgiel.

Her father said, ''By gosh, that looks like fun,'' and asked Scarlett if he could have a ride.

Mr Galway rode the scooter down the driveway three times, Mrs McRobie-Shaw said.

''He's a bit of a terror.''

The Yvette Williams Retirement Home resident attributed his longevity to a daily ''beer and jolly good laugh'' and recommended eating tripe, she said.

Her father drove to Mosgiel on winter weekends to watch the rugby on television at her Mosgiel home, Mrs McRobie-Shaw said.

''He is a very avid Highlanders and Otago fan.''

But he always went to the stadium to watch the Otago v Southland derby.

He had just enrolled for another season of lawn bowls.

''He is always smiling. He is a remarkable man.''
