The nominations are in and Taiaroa Head's albatross star will either have a name with a Scottish or Maori influence.
In May the Department of Conservation launched an online naming competition for the Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony's webcam chick which was born in January.
Yesterday Arran, inspired by the Isle of Arran in Scotland, Laidir meaning physically hardy in Scottish Gaelic, Maia meaning bravery, Raukura meaning feather plume and Tumanako meaning desire were announced as the top suggestions.
A Doc video revealed some of the 1672 entries had less serious meanings.
Fuzz-nut, Muffin, Pavlova and Helmet were among names rejected.
Otago Peninsula Trust marketing manager Sophie Barker said she helped scale the names down to 50 possible options.
''My favourite name didn't get through.''
Te Poari a Pukekura (the Pukekura co-management Trust) selected the top five names.
Voting for the winning name closes on June 30.
While most of the names had male connotations, the gender of the chick was not known.
The winner of the competition would have the opportunity to meet the albatross.
