Scouts find three leaders

Much can change in a week. Last week, members of the Fairfield Scout group were concerned they would be forced to fold after more than 40 years because they could not find a leader.

Now, they have the luxury of choice because a small jamboree of members of the public have offered their services.

The group's scout leader, Sue Scott, was delighted after the Otago Daily Times told of the group's woes last week, prompting three scout leaders to offer their help.

"We won't choose one. We'll use all three.

They will all work together and plan projects for the scouts," she said.

"It's like the old adage: three minds are better than one. We're very lucky."

The new trio will begin leading scouts immediately at the 40-year-old community organisation.

It has seven enthusiastic scouts, and many more children who are keas and cubs.

Ms Scott suffers from pericarditis (inflammation of the fibrous sac surrounding the heart), which she contracted after getting swine flu last year.

As a result, she is no longer able to continue in the role as scout leader.

She said the best part about the community's response to the club's call was she could now retire "with grace".

"It's made me very, very happy. Things are looking really good for the club."
