A  group of Port Chalmers seniors yesterday proved they were more than capable of riding the technology wave.

A Techweek information session for seniors attracted an almost full house at the Port Chalmers Library.

The 28 members of the Port Chalmers Seniors club asked questions about their tablets and mobile devices, and showed they were up-to-date on many information technology issues.

Gallaway Cook Allan IT manager Jamie Vaughan covered everything from anti-virus software to cyber bullying and internet scams.

He told the group many people were still using Windows 7.

''I've got Windows 10,'' one audience member quipped. ''It might see me out.''

Mr Vaughan ran through the various online scams, from cold calling by people pretending to be from Microsoft to scam emails.

He told the audience to look at the language used - it was often poorly written English - and the email address, which often did not match the company the scammer said they were from.

He also warned about virus alerts, which should come from a user's computer, not from an outside website.

He told the group technology was only going to become more advanced, and it was important to keep up with the changes, as technology made people's lives easier, but ''you need to be on your toes''.

During question time, it was clear many of the group were already doing that, as they asked about the best anti-virus software and about using their iPhones.

Mr Vaughan said after the meeting he was ''not at all'' surprised by the level of technology use.

He said seniors were more inclined to use technology to keep in touch with loved ones and to use the likes of genealogy sites, but otherwise they used it much the same as everybody else.
