Glenda Wallace, of Dunedin, was one of more than 350 people who attended a service at  First Church last night as part of World Suicide Prevention Day.

Hundreds of candles had been lit and placed around the  grounds of the church.

Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages.

It is responsible for more than 800,000 deaths, which equates to one suicide every 40 seconds.

The candles ceremony was

among many events held around the world to mark the annual day, including cycling, making banners and taking a minute to reach out to someone to change the course of their life.
