The Green Island pensioner celebrated 60 years of marriage yesterday to Bernice (nee Hawthorne).
The pair fondly remember the ''cobber'' who at Mr Sullivan's urging approached Mrs Sullivan at a dance in Christchurch in 1949.
Married the following year in Christchurch, Alfred and Bernice spent the first few years there, before moving to Dunedin in the early 1960s.
Mrs Sullivan, originally a shoemaker, looked after the couple's five children while Mr Sullivan worked as a motor mechanic.
The pair look back on the weekly dances they once attended with nostalgia, and Mr Sullivan reckons the young now do not have nearly as much fun as his generation.
As well as the dances, he remembers shooting rabbits, and swimming in the Waitaki River, and said now there were too many rules and regulations governing everyday life.
The Sullivans have 14 grandchildren, and will gather with family, friends, and neighbours on January 8 for an anniversary celebration.
