Emergency services responded to a flaming neon sign at a Dunedin culinary institution amidst heavy rains last night.

A witness said he was in the area to check on some staff when he noticed the Great Taste restaurant’s first floor neon sign buzzing before it burst into flames about 8.45pm.

After banging on the door of the restaurant, he called 111.

Crews from Fire and Emergency New Zealand arrived quickly and hosed the sign down with water, he said.

A total of three appliances could be seen at the scene, including an aerial appliance which was used to inspect the sign to check that the fire was out.
