Smashed window incident: taxi driver charged

A taxi driver accused of throwing a rock through a rival's window has been charged by police.

Earlier this year, the Otago Daily Times reported escalating tensions including threats and violence between a Dunedin bus operator and some city taxi drivers.

That tension reached its peak in early June, when a rock was thrown through the rear window of a Dunedin night bus, narrowly missing a passenger.

The alleged offender fled the scene on a scooter, which was later tracked to the Dunedin address of a taxi driver, Night Bus Dunedin operator Andrew Rutherford said.

A police spokeswoman yesterday confirmed a 53-year-old taxi driver had been charged in connection with the incident.

He is expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court today on charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop and wilful damage.

''I'm pleased that there will hopefully be a resolution to this,'' Mr Rutherford said.
