More than 400 Dunedin primary school pupils got moving yesterday.
Sport Otago invited new entrants to year 3 pupils to participate in the Fundamental Movement Skills Safari Fun Day at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
The pupils, aged between 5 and 7, played games with a safari theme.
Sport Otago fundamental skills adviser Kerri Maclennan said the event had grown in popularity.
"Feedback has been fantastic with all teachers very enthusiastic about an event for this age group, and the smiles on the children’s faces say it all."
Fundamental movement skills were the skills children need to participate successfully in games, physical activities and sports and could be broken down into three categories; stability, locomotor, and manipulative.
"By developing fundamental movement skills, children establish a sound base for sport skills such as throwing, catching, hopping, jumping, running, and kicking."
