University staff and students and members of the public on Monday tried wheelchair slalom and soccer and seated volleyball during the event to mark the United Nations' International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

New Zealand paralympians Holly Robinson and Caitlin Dore also attended the event.

University student adviser Jenny Weeks said she hoped the event would encourage people to become involved in inclusive sports such as wheelchair soccer.

Such sports offered important rehabilitation for people recovering from accidents, as well as making society more inclusive, she said.

It was hoped the sports day with a twist would become an annual event, she said.
