Some late transport submissions expected

About 24 individual public submissions were received by the Otago Regional Council on its regional transport strategy by this week's deadline.

The council had sought public submissions to help determine funding priorities for Otago's future transport programmes.

"We are expecting more to trickle in," Otago Regional Council transport manager Dr Jane Turnbull said.

"People will have posted them before the cut-off date and they won't have arrived yet."

Some organisations had also arranged for an extension for their submissions, she said.

Balancing Otago's transport needs in the face of tighter Government funding is an overarching theme of the draft regional transport strategy, which was released last month.

The strategy, which looks 30 years ahead, covers issues such as daily travel needs, transport to and from towns across Otago, and transport needs for primary production, freight, and tourism, transport committee chairman Stephen Woodhead said.

Late submissions would be considered on their merit, if received after yesterday's 5pm cut-off, Dr Turnbull said.

A public hearing had been scheduled for July 14 and 15 for members of the ORC's transport committees to consider the submissions before a strategy was finalised by regional councillors, Dr Turnbull said.
