South's top cop to move north

Southern police district Superindendant George Fraser has been announced as the new District Commander of Auckland City.

Police Commissioner Howard Broad announced his appointment this morning along with three new Assistant Commissioners of Police.

The appointments are: Assistant Commissioner Intelligence and Investigations Gavin Jones, Assistant Commissioner Operations Viv Rickard, Assistant Commissioner Auckland Steve Shortland and Supt Fraser as District Commander Auckland City.

Supt Fraser has been based in Dunedin since 2005, when he took up the Southern District commander position.

He had served all of his prior 30-year-long career in Auckland mainly in road policing and as the area commander of the Western area of the Auckland City District in 2003 and 2004.

Mr Broad said he was pleased to see the "seasoned performer'' return from Southern District to take charge of the Auckland City Central District.

Start dates for the new positions and the appointment of Acting District Commanders in the Southern, Waitemata and Counties Manukau districts will be announced shortly. Interviews for the vacancies will be held shortly.

Mr Broad said the new appointments recognised the need for additional senior management support for key operational parts of the service and were not a return to police regions.

"While the previous structure had seen one of the three Auckland District Commanders being an Assistant Commissioner who chaired the Board of Management, today's announcement creates an Assistant Commissioner specifically dedicated to the strategic needs of greater metropolitan Auckland.

"This is not a return to the old days of police regions. There will be no large headquarters. Instead the AC Auckland will have a small support staff of five people who will help the AC fulfil his purpose of leading and coordinating all policing activities within the Auckland Metro Area,'' Mr Broad said.
