Structural steel is put in on the site of the new music, theatre and performing arts building at the University of Otago, in Union St.

A university spokeswoman said the work was ''a significant milestone''. The steel was being put around the new lift shaft to the university Link building, between the existing music suite and teaching wing.

The work was still on target to be finished at the end of this year.

The development, which will cost $26million, involves constructing a two-storey recording studio building, and refurbishing the nearby College of Education's music suite, teaching wing, tower block and part of the education resource centre.
