Strong domestic tourism for city

Domestic tourism to Dunedin has remained strong amid Covid-19 restrictions on international travel.

An Enterprise Dunedin report set to be tabled at tomorrow’s meeting of the Dunedin City Council’s economic development committee shows the southern city performing well against national benchmarks.

The report shares figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s accommodation data programme, which keeps track of beds available to tourists.

The numbers for May show Dunedin had an occupancy rate of 61.5% of all beds filled on average, which compared favourably with the national figure of 39.4%.

During the time the Australian travel bubble was open the city did not have a large influx of transtasman travellers, only 24 visitors from across the ditch making purchases at the Dunedin i-Site visitor centre. Visitor centre purchases from Auckland tourists were up, accounting for 16.2% of domestic sales in the year to June 30.
