`Strong sense of community' at varsity

Oxford-bound University of Otago graduand and Rhodes Scholar Laura Fraser is increasingly appreciative of the university's "strong sense of community".

Miss Fraser (23) completed an LLB (hons) and BA in politics at Otago University last year and will be among about 480 graduands, mainly in commerce, tourism and law, who will graduate from the university in a ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall today.

This year she has been working as a law clerk for Justice Bill Wilson, a judge in the Supreme Court, Wellington.

Having returned to Dunedin for the occasion, she was feeling excited about graduation: "It's a nice end to a long time at university."

Otago University was notable not only for its strong sense of community, but also for its strengths in sport and cultural activities, she said.

In August, she will take up her Oxford scholarship, studying initially towards a bachelor of civil law degree, followed by a master of science in environmental change and management.
