Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) is warning of high bacteria levels in the Taieri River at Outram Glen, and people are advised not to swim in the area until the alert is lifted.

The site meets water quality guidelines for swimming most of the time, but the levels of bacteria in the water are sometimes elevated, following heavy rainfall and high river flows.

Research shows the source of bacteria in the water is sheep and cows, and it is recommended people stay out of the water for 48 hours after rainfall. — Allied Media
