A service providing return trips to supermarkets is expanding to Mosgiel.

Plus Bus co-ordinator Mrs Kasia Beale said Plus Bus provided a "door-to-door service'' to help the elderly and people who struggled using public transport to get groceries home from the supermarket.

Clients were picked up from home in a van for up to nine passengers.

"They benefit by remaining independent, socialising and making long-term friends.''

The service was run by the Dunedin Community Transport Trust since 2003.

On three consecutive days each week from Tuesdays, the bus visited Countdown Andersons Bay, Countdown Mornington, and Pak'n Save.

A new service would visit New World Mosgiel on Fridays.

The not-for-profit charitable trust was run by two paid staff - Mrs Beale and a driver - and 13 volunteers.

The cost for the service depended on where the client lived in Dunedin.

The service could be booked as a regular service or as a "one-off''.

For more information, phone Mrs Beale on (03) 455-4050.
