The wait is nearly over. Senior Constable Fred Jansen is educating motorists about correct use of signals when travelling around three new roundabouts in Green Island.

The roundabouts are being installed at the Green Island interchange to improve traffic flow.

The $2 million project, a collaboration between NZ Transport Agency and Dunedin City Council, is nearly finished.

‘‘People have been waiting for the roundabouts for nearly 20 years, and they’re so pleased to have them — so let’s make them work efficiently.’’ Snr Const Jansen, of Green Island, said the new roundabouts were a ‘‘blessing’’ and were improving traffic flow.

To keep traffic flowing, he was educating motorists on how to signal correctly when navigating a roundabout.

Some motorists were signalling when it was unnecessary and others were failing to signal at all, he said.

The Road Code

If you are turning left at the first exit of a roundabout: ★ Signal left as you come up to the roundabout.

If you are travelling more than halfway around a roundabout: ★ Signal right as you come up to the roundabout. ★ Signal left as you pass the exit before the one you wish to take.

If you are going straight through a roundabout:
★ Do not signal as you come up to the roundabout. ★ Signal left as you pass the exit before the one you wish to take.

Cyclists may find it difficult to maintain a turn signal on a roundabout and are exempt from the requirements.

Of course they are, they seem to be exempt from most road rules.

Good luck educating the majority of Dunedin drivers who have absolutely no clue how to signal at a roundabout.

I suggest Constable Fred spend some time at the roundabout near Forsyth Barr stadium to see how many drivers have got no idea.
