A teenage boy has been arrested following an early morning ram raid on a South Dunedin appliance store.

Police were alerted to the incident after a Nissan Primera smashed through the storefront of DTR in King Edward St early today.

A lawn mower and a guitar were stolen from the store, acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson said.

The 14-year-old offender fled the scene and was located shortly after in the Nissan by police.

A short car chase took place through the central city area, acting Snr Sgt Thomson said.

The teenager ran from the car on foot and a police dog unit was dispatched to locate him.

''A dog unit has located him at an address close to where the vehicle was last located,'' he said.

''He was hiding.''

The boy was arrested and taken into custody.

He was not believed to have any accomplices.

''He's helping us with other inquiries around town,'' acting Snr Sgt Thomson said.

The boy was being dealt with by police youth aid and would appear in the Youth Court today.
