The bagpiper started a minute too soon, but otherwise the Dunedin Labour Party conference began without a hitch tonight.

The opening speeches were finished and formal proceedings were about to end with a karakia, but a red-faced piper fluffed his queue, beginning a highland reel just as the prayer was about to begin.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told delegates they would hear her repeat two things a lot this weekend - "thanks'' and "we've got so much more to do''.

Ms Ardern reeled off a long list of reforms her government has enacted in its first year in office - "I'm very proud of that list, but also a little but exhausted by it as well.''

She then challenged delegates to devote the weekend to achieving further changes to better New Zealand.

"There is much more to do to make our economy more sustainable and to better spread prosperity to all.''

Tomorrow the main speakers will be Ms Ardern's deputy Kelvin Davis, and Finance Minister Grant Robertson.

The Prime Minister will also host a young leaders' panel.

Ms Ardern's Leader's Speech will be delivered at Dunedin Town Hall at 1.30pm Sunday.
