Thousands turn out for Great USA Day in Dunedin

Kelly Spiers is living the American dream — and her 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is the proof.

Ms Spiers’ classic car was among a sea of American steel at the Stateside Streeters Inc’s Great USA Day at Hancock Park, St Kilda, on Saturday.

Now a four-year member of the Stateside Streeters, Ms Spiers said she really became interested in cars through her trade of airbrushing — and, yes, she painted her car herself.

"It’s sort of a lifetime hobby that became my dream job", she said.

"I saw airbrushing one day and I just wanted to learn how to do it."

She said it had been hard as a woman to get into the male-dominated industry, but she knew quite a few female painters who had "the eye for it".

The car club’s display was touted as one of the largest displays of American-origin vehicles in the South.

The event was augmented by the Corvette Nationals — more than 70 Corvettes added to the display.

The not-for-profit car club says it uses events such as Saturday’s display to raise funds to support local organisations such as the Otago Community Hospice and the Breast Cancer Society.
