Three arrested after Nth Dunedin assaults

Three people have been arrested following a cluster of assaults in Dunedin's student quarter over Orientation week.

A 17-year-old was arrested after allegedly pulling a knife on two people in Albany St early on Saturday.

The knife was not used but the pair suffered minor injuries during the assault, a police spokeswoman said.

It followed four assaults in North Dunedin on February 19, at the start of O Week.

One man suffered a broken nose after allegedly being bottled in Hyde St, while another suffered a broken jaw after an alleged king hit in Dundas St.

Two other assaults - one in Castle St and another in Hyde St - also occurred early on February 19.

Two 19-year-olds had been arrested in relation to the bottle incident and the king hit.

Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson was unable to say if the alleged offenders were known to each other or if the crimes were linked.

Det Sgt Henderson said the two 19-year-olds who were arrested were not students.

The occupation of the 17-year-old arrested in relation to Saturday's assault was unknown. He was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and remanded on bail when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday.

One of the 19-year-olds was remanded in custody, while the other was subject to strict bail conditions.

The three will next appear in court on Friday.
