Contractors on a platform suspended from a large crane work on the Dunedin Railway Station clock tower yesterday.
Dunedin City Council property services group manager Laura McElhone said an assessment of the stonework’s condition was being carried out as part of long-term conservation planning.
That was being done at the same time an ageing fixed ladder was removed, and a lightning rod repaired.
The condition assessment was being done so the council could do better long-term maintenance planning for its buildings.
"There’s a whole heap of condition assessments we need to do on a whole heap of buildings," Dr McElhone said.
The lightning rod needed routine repair, and the ladder was so old it was unusable. It was removed so it would not be a health and safety hazard.
