Tirohanga adventure camp to expand

The Tirohanga Presbyterian Camp, at North Taieri, is to be expanded to meet growing demand for the adventure camp and retreat.

The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland has allocated $175,000 in funding to purchase adjoining land to "future-proof" the camp, synod executive officer Fergus Sime said yesterday.

"There are quite a few lifestyle blocks out there now and this will allow us to expand the camp and run camp activities without causing any disturbance to the neighbours," Mr Sime said.

The 30ha camp is owned by the Foundation Trust of Otago and is used by both Christian and non-Christian groups.

It has accommodation for up to 86 people and facilities include abseiling, orienteering and confidence courses and a collection of farm animals.

More than 100 Presbyterians from 75 Otago and Southland parishes attended the synod annual meeting at Maori Hill Presbyterian Church in Dunedin on Saturday.
