The driver, a 30-year-old Dunedin man, was heading home from working as a tour guide on the Otago Peninsula when he lost control of the 4WD at the intersection of Portobello Rd and Castlewood Rd about 8pm, he said.
Light rain had likely brought ''old diesel'' to the surface of the road, making it slippery.
The driver had a ''bump to the head'' and was treated at the scene by ambulance crew, but was not seriously injured.
