A Ttrack popular with mountain bikers and walkers above the Waipori Gorge remains closed because of damage from an early winter snow storm.
Government Track is a 7km track starting near Berwick, rising up the gorge through bush and trees.
Department of Conservation visitor and historic assets programme manager Dave Winterburn said the higher parts of the track were above the snow line, so there was a lot of damage to trees as a result.
As there were other tracks also damaged by the storm and later flooding, Doc was having to prioritise them.
So far, track damage at Outram Glen, where the Outram Charitable Trust did considerable remedial work soon after the storms, Leith Saddle and tracks in the Lawrence area had been repaired.
''It's dangerous work, so not fast.
''We're slowly re-opening them.''
Work was ongoing in the Silver Peaks and was about to start on Government Track. The aim with Government Track
was to clear a path through and get it back open.
