Tramper forced to dig snow hut

Police are urging trampers to exercise common sense after a man was rescued while tramping in the Rock and Pillar Range, near Middlemarch, in freezing conditions.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the 24-year-old man was found yesterday afternoon after spending more than 24 hours in the cold. He suffered mild hypothermia as a result.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the man had set out on Tuesday afternoon but did not reach the hut he was aiming for.

His mother called emergency services about 4pm yesterday and a search and rescue operation began.

The man spent the night in a snow hut he dug for himself before being located at 7.30pm.

Police were able to contact the man on his cellphone and ask for him to activate his emergency locator beacon.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the incident was a reminder to people to be sensible in the outdoors in winter.

"While he had the right equipment and probably did the right things, we would recommend that people check the weather forecast and the conditions for the area they're going in to, so that they're not putting themselves at risk.''

Snr Sgt Aitken said the man did not want to talk to media.
