A trucking company responsible for "thousands of litres of blood and guts" spilling on to a Dunedin road has been fined.

The offal spill happened on part of Townleys Rd in Kaikorai Valley on June 19 this year, closing the road for about 18 hours.

Otago Regional Council regulatory general manager Richard Saunders said an investigation found there was a breach of  the council's Water Plan in that there was an unpermitted discharge and an infringement notice would be issued.

However, there was no evidence that contaminants entered the water.

Due to the location and quick action taken by people at the site to clean it up - including the trucking company - there were limited effects on the environment," Mr Saunders said.

“The company have been willing participants in the investigation and demonstrated remorse for the incident and have taken the necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.”

A witness at the scene, who asked not to be named, described the spill as ‘‘thousands of litres of blood and guts’’ tipping out of a truck navigating a steep uphill section near the Kaikorai Valley Rd intersection and above a bridge crossing Kaikorai Stream.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said firefighters, along with representatives of the ORC and Dunedin City Council, were called to the scene, but it was too extensive for Fenz to deal with and no washing up action was taken.
