The Chalmers Community Board elected Jan Tucker for her fifth consecutive term as chairwoman when it held its inaugural meeting in Dunedin yesterday.

She was elected unopposed, as was Steve Walker for his second term as deputy.

The board has two new members: Mel Aitken and Ange McErlane.

They join returning members Raewynne Pedofski and Trevor Johnson, as well as Cr Andrew Noone.

Mrs Tucker told board members there were "big items" for the new community board to consider during its term.

The police restructuring proposal, which could see Port Chalmers' two police officers stationed in central Dunedin, had caused concern in the community, she said.

Other key issues were Port Otago's proposal to deepen its shipping channel, development of the area's walk and cycleway, the State Highway 88 realignment and the highway's general condition, and heavy traffic issues.

Gerard Collings was elected, unopposed, as chairman of the Waikouaiti Coast Community Board, which also held its inaugural meeting yesterday.

It is his second term as chairman - he served between 2004 and 2007 - and his fourth on the board.

Immediate past chairman Alasdair Morrison was elected, unopposed, as deputy chairman.

The board welcomed two new members, Mark Brown and Les Pullar, alongside returning members Geraldine Tait, Andy Barratt and Cr Noone.
