Twice the excitement for winner

Two months after winning the Otago Regional Race Unity Speech Competition in Dunedin, Otago Girls High School pupil Crystal Diong finally got her reward.

The 16-year-old won in March with a speech about "finding common ground".

During a school assembly yesterday, the 16-year-old was presented with two new Race Unity Speech Award shields - one to give back and a smaller one to keep - which were sponsored by the New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Baha'i community.

Dunedin police community relations co-ordinator Sergeant Matt Scoles said the presentation was regrettably delayed because the shields had only recently been completed.

During the presentation, competition chief judge Dr Jim Williams said the topic of this year's speech competition was particularly difficult but Crystal "rose above the challenge".

Crystal said as part of the prize, she had already travelled to Auckland early last month to compete in the semifinals.

While she was unsuccessful at that competition, she said it was a memorable experience.

The presentation of the shields yesterday was a bonus, she said.

"I was excited when I won the competition, but all that excitement came rushing back today.

"It's nice to have a tangible reward for all my hard work."
