Two face assault charges

Two men will appear in the Dunedin District Court after an altercation involving up to eight people and a knife in Brighton on Saturday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Damion Rangitutia said police were called after reports of street disorder in Bath St, Brighton, about 9am.

The melee had spilled over into nearby Pearse St by the time police arrived, although exactly what caused the incident was not yet clear, he said.

Alcohol was not a factor, but one of those involved was said to have a knife, he said.

On the way to the scene, police arrested one man trying to flee in a car, while a second man was found at a nearby house. The two men - aged 19 and 25 - would appear in court this week, each charged with assault, he said.

The 19-year-old had a minor self-inflicted knife wound to a finger, received during the incident, but it was not yet clear why that had happened, Acting Snr Sgt Rangitutia said.

Other details were also not yet available, but police inquiries were continuing, he said.

• A motorcyclist who crashed at Macraes Flat about 1pm on Saturday was flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter, a St John spokeswoman said.

The rider's injuries were not believed to be serious, but no other details were available, the spokeswoman said.
