Scaffolding rises to cloak the University Plaza building as work begins to clean and seal Oamaru stone, and install parapet capping and balustrade.

Earlier this year it emerged cracks had been discovered in sections of the Oamaru stone at the northern end of the building. A University of Otago spokeswoman said the university did not believe there was any cracking on the front face of the Oamaru stone, although there was some cracking at the northern end, where hoarding had been installed as a precautionary measure.

''That cracking is being monitored and we are working closely with Naylor Love to determine both the cause and the remedy of that problem.'' The financing of the work was still being worked through.
