Thousands of dollars worth of plants have been destroyed at Brighton Domain in Dunedin following an attack by vandals.

About 90 plants at the domain were crushed after a vehicle was driven over them early on Saturday.

Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall said he was disappointed by the act.

``They have driven over every green area they possibly could have.''

Freedom campers staying in the domain approached men in a white ute who were crushing the plants to ask them to stop, but the request was ignored, Mr Weatherall said.

Dunedin City Council parks maintenance team leader Nick Maguire said the plants were planted in January and cost $2300.

The damage was ``very disappointing''.

The council would replace the plants and was considering what measures may be needed to prevent future vandalism, Mr Maguire said.

Mr Weatherall was particularly concerned by the mentality of the vandals.

``The reason that planting has gone there was to try and deter people from driving on there when it gets wet.

``It's pretty concerning that there are individuals out there who enjoy doing this.''

He encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.
