Green-fingered customers had their chance to find something exotic or a good deal at the Dunedin Botanic Garden yesterday.

Garden collection supervisor Dylan Norfield said it took about three months to prepare for the plant sale.

"A lot of nurseries have shut down over the years, so if we can have these little rare plant sales like this, where you can get rare and unusual stuff ... and it’s just great for the public to see all of those nurseries together.

"It brings people into the gardens at a beautiful time of year when people can actually come and wander around the garden afterwards and ... see the stunning asset that we’ve got here in Dunedin."

There were about 15 stalls, each selling about 500 plants, he said.

"I just enjoy the atmosphere and the camaraderie between all the people.

"Dunedin’s a small place and lots of people know each other and we all meet up at this time of year.

"It’s just a good opportunity for people to come get a bargain.

"The plants are cheap and it’s just great to come and see what there is around and get advice from people as well."
