A Highlander at heart, Dave Waddell is hoping to tune up his favourite team in time to take out the final.
The part-time musician wrote an original song in honour of his favourite team, The Highlanders, and the catchy tune has caught on.
''I just wanted to make something up to support the lads and include all their names and everything,'' Mr Waddell (26) said.
After uploading the video to Youtube and Twitter on Sunday night, the video has been retweeted and shared by the Highlanders.
''This is good stuff... enjoy! We really do have fantastic fans. Thank you for taking the time to put this together,'' The Highlanders Facebook page said.
With almost 10,000 views on YouTube, nearly 600 shares on Facebook and more than 2,000 likes, Mr Waddell said he is both surprised, and pleased with the publicity it has been getting.
''I was just mucking around on Sunday at lunch and I started thinking of a few words so I went home and wrote it,'' he said.
Mr Waddell said the song took about an hour to write after the inspiration struck.
Written to the tune of Old Crow Medicine Show's Wagon Wheel the orignal lyrics include ''So rock me Landers with a back line move, rock me Landers under the roof, hey Highlanders rock me.''
As much as he would love to go to the final, Mr Waddell said he can not afford the expensive trip because he and his partner have a newborn baby.
''My dream is to get to the final because of the song,'' he said.
Hoping for a subsidised or free trip means Mr Waddell would be able to join his parents and closest friends in Wellington.
If he doesn't get to see the finals live, he said he hopes the song will at least increase gigs for his musical duo 'Payday' or help him find a teaching job in Dunedin.
