Dunedin is set to get an extra flight to Brisbane over the Christmas period.
Virgin Australia, which has an alliance with Air New Zealand on the transtasman route, yesterday announced the extra flight.
The airline said it would also add extra services between Brisbane and Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, while also providing a service between Christchurch and Melbourne.
Dunedin Airport marketing and communication manager Megan Crawford said the extra flight was ''great''.
The airline ran varying numbers of flights depending on the time of year - there are four flights a week at the moment.
There had been three last summer in what was usually a quieter period, but that would grow to four from December 18 to January 22.
That meant flights on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday during that period, she said.
''Obviously, those services have been tracking quite well, and we've been doing a little bit of marketing ourselves with the airlines to get that message out,'' Ms Crawford said.
Virgin was saying the service was performing well enough to warrant the extra flight, ''which is great for us''.
