A kitchen fire in a Dunedin flat was a reminder not to leave cooking unattended, a firefighter says.
Oil in a pot on a stove was the cause of the fire at the Taieri Rd property on Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in a resident being taken to Dunedin Hospital with burns and smoke inhalation.
Roslyn fire station station officer Justin Wafer said the message was simple.
''Keep an eye on your food, and don't leave it unattended when you cook.''
The man at the property had tried to fight the kitchen fire and stop it spreading into the lounge, but ''another occupant of the house and a passer-by managed to fight it with a garden hose''.
Mr Wafer said the fire served as a reminder to shut the door on the fire, ensure everyone was out of the house and call the Fire Service.
''He was lucky. It could have been a whole lot worse.''
